A doa selamat for new premises is a short prayer gathering of thanks and for blessings, followed by a meal. For about 60 guests in a shop or office, the food should arrive as the doa ends, from a MUIS-certified kitchen, in a format your floor space can hold. Here is how to plan it.
Key takeaways
- The meal comes after the prayer, so plan the delivery around the end of the doa, not the start.
- SFA asks for delivery at most 1 hour before the meal, and for food to be eaten within 4 hours of cooking.
- Choose the format by space: a set-up buffet needs a wall for the table line; packets and bento need only a counter.
- Check the caterer's certificate on the MUIS register yourself.
- Saffrons caters from 30 guests and quotes on WhatsApp. It publishes no per-person rate.
Send your doa selamat details to Saffrons on WhatsApp (+65 9144 7381) and the team will reply with a quote.
What is a doa selamat, and why hold one for new premises?
A doa selamat is a prayer of thanks to God, or a prayer asking for blessings. That is how Kamus Dewan, the Malay dictionary published by Malaysia's Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, defines it: "doa kerana bersyukur kpd Tuhan atau kerana meminta berkat".
The same dictionary describes a kenduri (a meal held for a religious purpose) as a meal "lazimnya didahului oleh zikir, doa" — usually preceded by remembrance of God and prayers. It also lists a kenduri selamat: a kenduri of thanks that an undertaking has gone safely.
Read together, the two entries explain why a doa selamat suits a new shop, office, clinic or food stall. You give thanks for getting this far, ask for blessings on what comes next, and then feed the people who helped. How the prayer is led, and what is recited, is for your family, your mosque or your religious teacher to decide. This guide covers the food.
If the doa is for a new home rather than a business, our guide to a doa selamat for a new home deals with an empty flat and no kitchen. For how this gathering sits beside other occasions, see the five kinds of kenduri.
When should the food arrive: before or after the doa?
After. The meal follows the prayer, so the food only needs to be ready when the doa ends. Two rules from the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) then set the window.
First, SFA's guidelines for ordering catered meals say food should spend no more than 4 hours at room temperature, counted from when the caterer cooks it to when your guests eat it. Packing, transport and laying out all count inside those 4 hours, so your guests have less time than that.
Second, SFA says to ask for the food to be delivered no more than 1 hour before the meal, and no earlier. The same document covers a staff lunch in the office, so it applies to a gathering at your premises as much as to a wedding hall.
Here is how that works in practice. Say your doa starts at 11am and you expect to eat at about noon. Ask for delivery no earlier than 11am. If the doa runs long, the clock keeps running, so do not hold the food back "for later" once the 4 hours are close.
Look for the time stamp. Under SFA's guidelines, a time stamp label on packed meals, or a time stamp sign on each buffet table, has been mandatory since 15 February 2012. It shows when the food was cooked and the time to eat it by, which is no later than 4 hours after cooking.
When that time passes, leftovers should be thrown away, not kept for the evening. Our guide on how long catered food stays safe goes through the full SFA list.

Which catering format suits 60 guests in a shop or office?
Pick the format by your floor space and how guests will eat. A shop unit on opening day may have fresh fittings, stock on the shelves and few seats. A buffet needs a clear wall and room to queue. Packets and bento need only a counter and someone to hand them out. This table sets out what Saffrons' own package pages list, read on 26 October 2026.
| Format | What the package page lists | Suits a doa selamat when |
|---|---|---|
| Buffet Package 1 | Briyani rice or bee hoon briyani (rice vermicelli); mutton masala or fish; a chicken dish (masala, tandoori or masak merah, in a spicy tomato sauce); dalcha (lentil curry), acar timun (cucumber pickle), hot and cold drinks; buffet trays, tables and skirting, disposable wares; delivery and setting up | You have a wall for a table line and guests will queue and eat on site |
| Buffet Package 2 | As above, plus two kinds of Malay kueh (traditional cakes), a hot dessert of the day, and coffee, tea and teh tarik (pulled milk tea) | The doa is the main event of the day and guests will stay to talk |
| Mini Buffet Package 1 / Mini Buffet Package 2 | Briyani rice or bee hoon briyani with mutton, chicken or fish; dalcha and acar timun; packed in disposable trays or large-capacity thermo jars; delivery, or self-collection at no extra charge; no set-up listed | You have your own table and can lay the trays out yourself |
| Briyani packets | Briyani rice or bee hoon briyani with mutton, chicken or fish, in brown paper packets; dalcha with briyani rice only | Space is tight, or guests will eat and go back to work |
| Briyani bento sets | Individually packed sets with the same rice and main choices; vegetarian options offered | You want each guest to get a sealed portion, or some guests are vegetarian |
Our view: for a doa selamat in a typical shop unit, packets or bento are the easier choice. Nothing sits open on a counter, and each packed meal carries its own time stamp label. A set-up buffet is worth it when the space allows a proper table line, because the package includes the tables and skirting.
On numbers, SFA asks hosts to order enough for the guests but not in excess. If 60 is a guess, read how much food to order before you fix the count. Our guide to halal catering for 50 guests compares the same formats at a close headcount.

Feeding staff, a landlord and non-Muslim guests
A doa selamat for a business often brings together people who do not usually eat at the same table: your family, staff of different faiths, the landlord, neighbouring shopkeepers and early customers. One halal spread lets everyone eat from the same food. If some guests are vegetarian, Saffrons' bento page says vegetarian options are offered, so ask for a count when you request the quote.
For Muslim guests, the halal check matters more than the menu. You can check a certificate yourself. In a 2023 reply to a parliamentary question, the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth said the public can verify halal certificates against the list on MUIS's website or its MuslimSG app.
Ask which certificate covers the kitchen that cooks your food, not only a restaurant counter. MUIS issues its Food Preparation Area scheme to catering establishments and central kitchen facilities.
On the MUIS halal register, checked on 26 October 2026, Saffrons holds five certificates. One is FPGN21050001543, a Food Preparation Area certificate for a catering company at 1 Kaki Bukit Road 1, Enterprise One. Search "Saffrons" on the register to see all five.
SFA also asks hosts to engage only licensed food caterers. Saffrons' catering packages page describes it as a 100% Muslim-owned company with an SFA-licensed central kitchen and MUIS certification.

What food is usual at a doa selamat?
There is no set menu. The dictionary definitions above describe a meal after prayers, not particular dishes, and we found no MUIS or other official page that names a dish every doa selamat must have. Menus vary by family and by community.
What matters on the day is food that holds well, suits a mixed table and can be eaten within SFA's 4 hours. A rice dish with one or two mains is a practical shape for that. Saffrons' packages are built around briyani: briyani rice or bee hoon briyani, mutton masala or fish, a chicken dish, dalcha (a lentil curry) and acar timun (a cucumber pickle). If your family keeps a dish of its own for these occasions, say so when you ask for the quote, and ask what the kitchen can do.
Your checklist for the day
- Fix the time of the doa first. The meal time follows from it.
- Confirm the headcount. Saffrons caters from 30 to 3,000 guests, according to its homepage. Count staff, family, landlord and neighbours.
- Choose the format by space. Use the table above: buffet if there is a wall for the table line, packets or bento if there is only a counter.
- Check the certificate. Look the caterer up on the MUIS register or the MuslimSG app.
- Set the delivery window. At most 1 hour before the meal, per SFA.
- Read the time stamp on the packets or the buffet sign when the food arrives.
- Plan for leftovers. After the eat-by time, throw them away. Do not keep them for the evening.
- Ask for vegetarian portions if some guests need them.
- Ask about billing. The Buffet Package 1 page says corporate billing is available, which helps if the company is paying.

Where Saffrons fits
Saffrons publishes this guide. It is a halal caterer whose menu centres on its Gold Class Briyani, and it caters for companies as well as families.
For a doa selamat at new premises, it can send any of the formats in the table above: a set-up buffet, a mini buffet in trays or thermo jars, briyani packets or bento sets. It does not publish per-person prices, so quotes come by WhatsApp.
Copy this, fill it in and send it:
Doa selamat at new premises. Date: ___. Doa starts: ___. Meal at: ___. Address and unit: ___. Guests: about 60 (vegetarian: ___). Format: buffet / mini buffet / packets / bento. Billing: personal / company.
WhatsApp Saffrons on +65 9144 7381 or browse the catering packages first.
FAQ
What if fewer than 30 people are coming to the doa selamat?
Saffrons' catering starts at 30 guests, as its homepage states. For a smaller doa selamat, ask on WhatsApp about briyani packets or bento sets, which come individually packed. A very small gathering of family and one or two staff may not need a caterer at all. Whatever you choose, the SFA 4-hour rule still applies to bought-in food.
How can I check that a caterer is really halal-certified?
Search the caterer's name on the MUIS halal register or in the MuslimSG app, which MCCY says the public can use to verify certificates. Check that the certificate covers the kitchen that cooks your order. MUIS issues its Food Preparation Area scheme to catering establishments and central kitchens. Saffrons' five certificates can be found by searching "Saffrons" on the register.
Customs vary by family and region; this describes common practice in Singapore, not religious rulings. For rulings consult MUIS or your religious teacher. Menus and packages change; Saffrons does not publish per-person rates — request a quote on WhatsApp +65 9144 7381. Verify MUIS certification status at booking.
